A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was publicly declared, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.
Changing Odds in Wagers
Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been apprehended.
A single trader, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.
It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement
Platform data shows that users put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
However these probabilities had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in positions just before the official statement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.
A small number of other traders also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.
Political Attention Intensifies
Politicians are starting to take note.
A new rule presented on recently seeks to ban public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.
