A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
